Discover Puerto Rico and Don Q Delight Mets Fans with Piña Colada Promotion at Citi Field
The initiative featured a series of special promotions inside and outside the stadium highlighting the origins of the piña colada and honoring Puerto Rican baseball stars Francisco Lindor and Edwin “Sugar” Díaz. As part of this effort, Discover Puerto Rico partnered with Don Q to host a lively tailgate party before the game, where attendees enjoyed tastings of the iconic piña colada and learned more about its history. This experience not only celebrated one of the Island’s most emblematic creations but also served as an invitation to savor it in its place of origin: Puerto Rico.
“It always feels incredible when a piece of Puerto Rico comes to our field. It makes me feel at home… like I’m playing again in my hometown. I’m really excited,” said Lindor.
“This is the first time the Mets celebrate Rum Day, and at Discover Puerto Rico we are thrilled to promote the Island’s flavors alongside Don Q Rum and our iconic piña colada. It’s a perfect moment to continue positioning our destination in one of our main markets and showcase what Puerto Rico has to offer to travelers, especially baseball fans,” said Karinna Sostre, Director of Marketing at Discover Puerto Rico.

Vanessa Cendan, Senior Marketing Manager at Don Q Rum, added: “Partnering with Discover Puerto Rico to bring the iconic piña colada to Mets fans at Citi Field is a true celebration of Puerto Rican heritage. As the original rum of the piña colada, Don Q is proud to share an authentic taste of our Island with New York, paying tribute to a cocktail born in Puerto Rico and loved around the world.”
The event combined National Rum Day with the Puerto Rico’s Day at the Ballpark promotional series, which highlights Puerto Rican heritage during Major League Baseball games. It also forms part of a broader effort to inspire sports fans to experience what Puerto Rico has to offer on the field and beyond.
In June, baseball-related destination promotions included player Kike Hernández, who starred in a video from the Return the Love series, encouraging respectful tourism. These initiatives also support the upcoming World Baseball Classic 2026, which will be hosted at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan from March 6–11.
In total, 10,000 discount coupons for piña colada purchases were distributed inside the stadium. Additionally, bar menus featured a link where consumers could learn about the cocktail’s history and destination information. Discover Puerto Rico branding also appeared throughout the stadium, complemented by media and influencer activations in New York City highlighting Puerto Rico as a premier travel destination.
