In just 11 months since the relaunch of Discover Puerto Rico’s Puerto Rico Travel Specialist educational program, over 13,000 travel professionals have registered, and the course completion rate has increased by 60%.
This achievement has directly contributed to room night sales growth, hitting a record in May 2025 when sales revenue surpassed $1 million.
The Puerto Rico Travel Specialist program is designed to help travel advisors understand key aspects of the Island as a tourism destination. The content highlights Puerto Rico’s geographic location and its status as a U.S. territory—a major advantage for domestic travelers, as no passport, visa, or customs clearance is required to travel between the Island and the mainland. This gives Puerto Rico a competitive edge over other Caribbean destinations that require immigration procedures, even if minimal.
The program offers a comprehensive look at the destination, featuring information on major attractions such as beaches, El Yunque National Forest, historic coffee haciendas, romantic experiences like honeymoons, and regional highlights in municipalities including San Juan, Ponce, Aguadilla, Bayamón, Humacao, and Cabo Rojo.
“In 15 years with the previous platform, we had 35,000 registered agents—but not all completed the course. With this new version, over 13,000 have registered in less than a year, and the average graduation rate has increased by 60%. We’re moving forward in leaps and bounds,” said Francisco Blanch, Leisure Sales Director at Discover Puerto Rico.
Relaunched in July 2024, the updated format is shorter, more user-friendly, and rich in audiovisual content. In addition to the educational module and a reward system for confirmed bookings, a mobile app was added, compatible with Android and iPhone. The app allows agents to access and instantly share digital materials with clients, including brochures, videos, and information on tours, beaches, museums, and cities—including helpful tools like the Watch the Waves beach safety guide.
“It’s an easy-to-read module, with plenty of educational videos. The tool is so successful because it’s simple, engaging, and highly functional. We’re truly proud of the results and the new tools we’ve made available. We’re on track to surpass all previous records,” Blanch added.
The reward system allows agents to earn 100 points for each sale involving a stay in Puerto Rico, including hotel nights, car rentals, and excursions. These points can be redeemed for hotel stays or other services offered by Discover Puerto Rico partners.
“Agents can redeem points for hotel nights, experiences, or promotional items like luggage and backpacks. We also continue to invite local hotels and providers to join the program and offer rewards through their products,” said Blanch.
While the Puerto Rico Travel Specialist program is tailored to travel advisors, Discover Puerto Rico encourages all tourism partners—from taxi and Uber drivers to tour operators—to complete the training, as it offers valuable historical and up-to-date information they can share with clients. However, the reward system is exclusive to travel agents.
“We’re proud and excited about the program relaunch and the results we’ve seen. We remain firmly committed to continuing our education efforts with the travel advisor community, which plays a fundamental role in promoting our destination,” Blanch concluded.
The Puerto Rico Travel Specialist program is completely free and available in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. The course can be accessed through the Discover Puerto Rico website, under the Travel Professionals section.
