Fajardo: A Tour to Strengthen the Destination’s Offering from a Local Perspective
To continue to strengthen Puerto Rico’s tourism offering at the municipal level, Discover Puerto Rico conducted a site visit in Fajardo alongside local partners, exploring cultural spaces, natural attractions, and culinary experiences that are part of the destination’s tourism ecosystem.
These visits provide valuable, firsthand insight into the resources available in each municipality, helping identify opportunities for integration while strengthening connections among local industry stakeholders.
The visit began at the Casa de la Cultura de Fajardo, a space that preserves an important part of the municipality’s history, founded in 1772. The experience highlighted the role of culture as a driver of identity and development, as well as initiatives that support local talent, such as “Martes para las Artes,” where Fajardo-based artists showcase their work, books, and creative projects.
Fajardo stands out for its unique offering that blends heritage, nature, and experiences. It is the only municipality in Puerto Rico with two lighthouses—including the Faro de Las Cabezas de San Juan—and one of the few places in the world with an accessible bioluminescent bay, one of its main attractions.
Its geography also positions it as a strategic gateway to nearby islands and cays, such as Icacos and Palomino, as well as well-known beaches like Seven Seas. The importance of properly guiding visitors on ocean conditions was also emphasized, particularly in areas such as Playa Escondida and Playa Colorá, which are not suitable for swimming due to strong currents.
During the visit, participants explored the Parque Pasivo de Las Croabas, a key recreational space that connects directly with the area’s culinary corridor, where a diverse range of dining options enhances the visitor experience. From this location, views of Isleta Marina further integrate scenic landscapes with economic activity.
The experience also included stops at local businesses such as Buñuelos, a longstanding tradition dating back to 1945, founded by Gregorio Román. Over generations, the concept has evolved while maintaining its essence, now entering a new phase with the opening of a physical location for visitors.
Contemporary culinary offerings such as Amor y Sal were also highlighted, contributing to the diversity of Fajardo’s food scene and aligning with evolving visitor preferences.
Beyond attractions, the visit also identified elements related to infrastructure and accessibility, including the availability of elevators for individuals with reduced mobility in cultural spaces, as well as initiatives that support local business development, such as workshops for entrepreneurs and merchants.
Fajardo also hosts events that strengthen its cultural identity and attract visitors, including its annual festival held on the last Sunday of July, along with ongoing efforts to promote the arts and community engagement.
These types of site visits reinforce the importance of viewing the destination through an integrated lens, where each municipality contributes to the overall visitor experience. At the same time, they help build a collaborative network among local stakeholders, aligned with the sustainable and strategic development of tourism in Puerto Rico.
