Puerto Rico Successfully Hosts Its First PCMA Summit
The Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) hosted its Business Events Summit in Puerto Rico for the first time, marking the debut of one of the meetings and events industry’s most recognized educational conferences. The summit brings together hundreds of event organizers and suppliers to promote professional development, knowledge sharing, and new business opportunities.
PCMA describes the Business Events Summit as “an advanced, members-only educational experience—an immersive, skills-focused summit designed for business events professionals looking to sharpen their expertise, solve real-world challenges, and amplify their impact.”
This year’s edition, held June 21–24 at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, welcomed nearly 700 industry professionals, including event organizers and suppliers. The summit represented a valuable opportunity for Discover Puerto Rico to continue positioning the Island as a premier destination for meetings, conventions, and large-scale corporate events.
The program combined 45-minute educational sessions with off-site experiences, allowing attendees to explore some of Puerto Rico’s most iconic attractions. Participants who visited El Portal de El Yunque enjoyed a guided walk through the rainforest; those attending activities at the Antiguo Casino complemented their experience with a tour of Old San Juan; attendees at Casa Bacardí participated in a mixology class; while those visiting the Puerto Rico Convention Center took part in a site inspection of the facilities.
The event concluded at the Coca-Cola Music Hall, where attendees gathered for the keynote presentation. The closing reception was then held at Distrito T-Mobile.
For Discover Puerto Rico, the organization responsible for promoting and marketing the destination, the summit served as a strategic platform to showcase the diversity of venues, experiences, and capabilities Puerto Rico offers for the meetings and incentives industry.
As part of the complementary initiatives surrounding the summit, Discover Puerto Rico organized a familiarization trip (FAM) beginning on June 24 for 15 clients, who toured several hotels throughout the Island’s eastern region and the San Juan metropolitan area.
Although it is still too early to measure the summit’s economic impact, the event is expected to generate positive results for the destination, given the immediate response from participants, many of whom expressed enthusiasm and interest in hosting future events in Puerto Rico.
During the summit, Discover Puerto Rico also introduced the Pop-Up Market, an artisan marketplace developed in collaboration with several local brands. Attendees had the opportunity to discover and purchase Puerto Rican products, including Barras handcrafted soaps with piña colada scent, hand towels created by UCreative Atelier featuring elements of Puerto Rican culture, and Don Ruiz Coffee. The experience concluded with a coconut, pineapple, and passion fruit ice cream cart.
GSI managed transportation logistics and coordinated the off-site experiences throughout the event.
Another highlight of the summit was the participation of 25 University of Puerto Rico students who served as volunteers. The experience gave them firsthand exposure to the operation of an international event of this scale while allowing them to collaborate with the Discover Puerto Rico team and further strengthen their professional development.
Discover Puerto Rico’s Sales and Destination Experience teams continue to lead initiatives aimed at attracting events that strengthen Puerto Rico’s position in the meetings and incentives market. As part of these efforts, El Conquistador Resort will once again host a major international event in August when it welcomes SITE Classic 2026.
Hosting international events such as these is part of Discover Puerto Rico’s strategy to strengthen the Island’s position as a competitive destination for the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry, creating opportunities for Puerto Rico’s continued economic development.
