In anticipation of the new direct route between Mexico City and San Juan, Discover Puerto Rico carried out a series of media engagements in Mexico from September 23 to 25 to showcase the Island’s natural wonders, rich gastronomy, and vibrant cultural experiences.
Puerto Rico to Launch Direct Route with Mexico City
The direct Aeroméxico flight between both cities will begin on October 29, marking the return of an air connection that had been absent for more than 25 years. The route will offer four weekly flights: from Mexico City to San Juan on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and from San Juan to Mexico City on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
This media mission represents the first step in Discover Puerto Rico’s strategic efforts to strengthen the destination’s perception among travelers from this market. While Mexico has been part of the DMO’s outreach since its inception, it had previously been considered an exploratory market. With the arrival of this new direct route, Mexico becomes a priority international market, with the potential not only to attract hundreds of Mexican travelers but also to serve as a bridge between Puerto Rico and the rest of Latin America.
Puerto Rico is not an unknown destination for Mexicans. The music of artists such as Ricky Martin, Chayanne, and more recently Bad Bunny, has helped forge a cultural link between the two countries. Now, this air connection will give Mexican travelers the opportunity to visit the Island and experience much more beyond the music.
During the media mission, attendees showed great interest in Puerto Rico’s adventure and nature experiences, beyond the charm of its beaches. Among the most mentioned attractions were the bioluminescent bays of Lajas, Fajardo, and Vieques, the El Yunque National Forest, and the Toro Verde Adventure Park, among others.
The fall launch of the route was highlighted by Discover Puerto Rico as ideal for attracting travelers seeking to escape cold temperatures and enjoy the Island’s warm climate. The DMO also emphasized that Puerto Rico celebrates the longest Christmas season in the world, culminating with the San Sebastián Street Festival.
As part of its immediate efforts to strengthen Puerto Rico’s presence in the Mexican market, Discover Puerto Rico launched two promotional campaigns: one in collaboration with Skyscanner, a digital tool for flight searches and price comparisons, and another with Televisa, the Mexican television network.
In the coming months, two press trips (fam trips) will take place. The first will host four journalists visiting San Juan and Río Grande to explore some of the Island’s main attractions and build anticipation for the new route. The second will be held after the official inauguration, aiming to inspire media coverage about the experiences Puerto Rico offers and continue positioning the Island as an ideal destination for Mexican travelers.
