Puerto Rican Baseball Glory
As Boricua historian Jossie Alvarado explains, “Puerto Rico has produced more professional baseball players than any other sport in its history,” with more than 400 Puerto Rican athletes having competed in Major League Baseball and earning countless awards at the highest level of the game. From Roberto Clemente, the most iconic figure in Puerto Rican sports history, to Hall of Famers Orlando Cepeda, Roberto Alomar, Iván Rodríguez, Edgar Martínez, and Carlos Beltrán.
The Island has also hosted the World Baseball Classic four times, consistently ranking among the top-performing teams. “We’re known for our great ballplayers and for being loyal, passionate, and unconditional fans who bring contagious joy and unstoppable energy to every game,” says Alvarado. In Puerto Rico, baseball history dates back to 1898, and today it lives on in stadiums, museums, and in the rhythm of plena that echoes through every celebration. It’s no wonder fans grab their palitos and panderos, head to the stadium to catch a game live, or gather at their favorite local sports bar. Discover the fervor of Puerto Rico’s love for baseball and join in the chanting whenever you hear, “¡Viene Puerto Rico!”
