Pirates, sugar barons, and natural beauty! 

The municipality of Quebradillas is a playground for nature lovers and those looking for outdoor excitement, like camping and hiking. The most popular recreational spot is the Guajataca area, where you'll find a river, forest, lake, and beach. The area extends into several neighboring towns, including Lares, San Sebastián, and Isabela.

Known as The Pirate's Lair, Quebradillas once held the beach hideout of the legendary pirate Roberto Cofresí, which you can still explore today.

Things to Do

Guajataca Tunnel and Beach

For a beautiful, easy coastal trek, visit the Guajataca Tunnel. The old railway tunnel carved into the side of the mountain is a remnant of the Island's sugarcane industry. The tunnel connects the towns of Quebradillas and Isabela, and a trail follows the coast to Guajataca Beach. The beach is rocky and the waves from the Atlantic Ocean are very rough, making it a sightseeing beach.

Guajataca Lake and Campgrounds

This manmade lake was created in 1929 and is fed by the Guajataca River. Currently, the lake is used as a reservoir, wildlife refuge, and recreational area, so it's a popular spot for kayaking and fishing.

It's also the location of the Guajataca Scout Reservation, the main campground in Puerto Rico for the Boy Scouts of America. Nearby, you can also find your own campsite to enjoy the wonders of this natural area for more than an afternoon.

Puerto Hermina Beach: A Pirate's Hideaway 

Puerto Hermina Beach is a secluded spot found at the bottom of a winding mountain road. The water conditions are more appropriate for surfing than for swimming, while the sandy coast is ideal for relaxing and sunbathing.

This beach's biggest claim to fame is the nearby historic ruin thought to have been the hideout of Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, who terrorized the West Indies in the 1800s.

La Guarida del Pirata Mini-Golf

To really live the pirate experience, go for 18 holes of mini-golf decorated with skeletons, treasure chests, pirate ships, and, of course, pirates, at La Guarida del Pirata (The Pirate's Lair). Every week, the mini-golf course also features live music or DJs playing everything from acoustic rock and salsa to old-school reggaetón.

Piratas de Quebradillas

Puerto Rico has a national basketball league called Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN), and one of the most famous teams in the league are the six-time national champions the Pirates of Quebradillas. If you enjoy basketball and happen to visit the Island during the league's regular-season (March through June), catch a game at the Raymond Dalmau Coliseum.
