How did your journey into pro baseball begin, and what moments have defined your path?

My journey into pro ball started in 2009, when I was 17, still a senior in high school, and got drafted by the Houston Astros. Then I made my way through the minor leagues, where one year feels like 10 in this lifetime. It wasn’t until 2014 that I made it to the big leagues, so to me, it felt like an eternity. From that point until now, it’s been 11 years, but it’s all flown by fast. It’s gone by in the blink of an eye… the complete opposite of the minor leagues.

Throughout, many moments have shaped me, making it very hard to pick one that has defined me, but that time, that journey that felt eternal in the minor league, was a testament to what was ahead.  There’s no bigger “I made it” moment than your first big league game.

If you could describe your playing style in three words, what would they be?

Grinder, reliable, and playing hard (that last one is not really one word…)

You're known for your versatility. How do you mentally prepare to switch roles so easily?

This might’ve been a tougher question to answer 10 or 11 years ago, but after doing it for so long, it’s become second nature. At this point, it’s not something I actively think about — I trust my instincts and let muscle memory take over.

How has Puerto Rican culture shaped you both on and off the field?

Puerto Rican culture has shaped me in a big way, especially on the field. Every time I step out there, I’m fully aware that I’m representing the Island — and I take that responsibility to heart. I wear Puerto Rico on my sleeve with pride.

Off the field, I know I’ve got a bit of an out-of-the-box personality, and I think that’s something I can fully embrace because of where I’m from. As Puerto Ricans, we’re proud of who we are and where we come from. We live with joy, we’re loud, and we love being the life of the party — and honestly, all of that reflects who I am.

What do you love most about being Boricua?

The thing that I like I love the most about being Puerto Rican is the culture that I come from!

Are there any Boricua role models, athletes, artists, or even family who have inspired your journey?

Yes — my dad has been the biggest influence in my life. He’s really been the focal point for me. I also grew up following Jorge Posada’s career closely, since his dad is actually my godfather. Both Jorge Posada Sr. and Jr. have had a big impact on my journey in baseball.

Music is such a big part of life on the Island. What role does it play in your day-to-day or in your game day mindset?

I live my life with music — it’s always playing in the background. Honestly, places feel awkward to me without it. Music is good for the heart and the mind. I’m constantly listening to something, whether it’s to get in the zone before a game, lift myself out of a bad mood, or give me that extra boost of energy. It’s a huge part of my routine and definitely high on the list of things that keep me grounded and motivated.

Do you have a favorite Puerto Rican artist or genre that instantly makes you feel at home?

Baseball player Kike Hernández.

You come from a town full of talent. What makes your hometown special to you?

San Juan is special to me because it holds all the core memories from my childhood. I spent my entire youth there, and with my parents still living in the city, every time I go back, it feels like stepping into a time capsule — reliving my whole life, moment by moment.

When you're back home, what's the first place you have to visit?

My grandparents’ house — I’m really lucky because they live right next to my parents. It’s always felt like one big home filled with family and memories.

How did growing up there shape how you play, compete, or connect with fans?

It shaped the way I play the game — it’s where I grew up learning and competing. It’s all I’ve ever known, so even now, it still influences how I see the game and how I play it.

Let's say someone is visiting your hometown. What should they eat, see, or do?

They should go to Panadería Lemy and eat some pan sobao!

What is your favorite place to eat?

Besides my grandmother’s house and Panadería Lemy, they are Bebo’s Café and La Cabaña in Levittown

Any hidden gems or spots you're willing to share?

It’s not exactly a hidden secret, but my favorite beach in all of Puerto Rico is Flamenco Beach in Culebra. It’s absolutely stunning — a must-visit anytime you’re on the Island!

What are your beach essentials?

Una sillita de playa (beach chair), sunscreen, and pitorro

What advice would you give visitors to help them truly experience and take care of Puerto Rico?

Make sure to prepare and do your research before coming to Puerto Rico — because whatever activity you can think of, chances are we’ve got it. From incredible sightseeing to indoor fun, outdoor adventures, and unforgettable excursions.

Most importantly, please be respectful when you visit. Treat the Island the way you’d treat your own hometown, your country, or any place you hold close to your heart.
