    International Airports in Puerto Rico

    Puerto Rico is home to three international airports in the north, south, and west regions of the Island. San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín Airport (SJU) is a major transportation hub located in the Metro region, receiving the most air traffic. More than 20 airlines fly there, from large-scale operators like JetBlue, Delta, Aeromexico, British Airways, and Iberia, to regional carriers like Intercaribbean and Air Antilles for island-hopping adventures.

    While Rafael Hernandez (BQN) in Aguadilla and Mercedita (PSE) in Ponce aren’t as busy, they also welcome international travelers. 

    Countries That Offer Direct Flights to Puerto Rico

    Spain

    If traveling from Madrid (MAD), Iberia offers a direct nine-hour flight arriving in San Juan.

    Colombia

    You can get direct flights from San Andrés (ADZ), Bogotá (BOG), and Medellín (MDE) to San Juan with Avianca, JetBlue, and Copa.

    Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica

    You can take direct flights from Cancún, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; and San José, Costa Rica, with Copa Airlines.

    Caribbean

    Puerto Rico is a great place to travel throughout the Caribbean, with direct flights from the Dominican Republic, Anguilla, Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sint Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago, offered by Frontier, JetBlue, Copa Airlines, and more.

    Visa Requirements for International Travelers to Puerto Rico

    Puerto Rico follows the same laws as the U.S., with visa requirements varying by country. For countries like Spain, the UK, and Ireland, travelers must complete the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Other countries, like Colombia and Mexico, require an American visa.

    International Arrival by Cruise

    With its key location within the Caribbean, Puerto Rico has been a popular stop for cruise travelers for decades. The Island receives ships from companies like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival, and Holland America. It’s also a great place to homeport!

    Puerto Rico has two main passenger ports. In San Juan, cruise-goers can walk right from the ship into the heart of the walled city via the main cruise terminal. In the South, the municipality of Ponce offers less frequent service but is equally enticing due to its rich history, scenery, and culture.

    Visa/ESTA Requirements for International Cruise Passengers

    As previously mentioned, Puerto Rico follows the same guidelines as the mainland. Visa and ESTA requirements include:

    • A valid passport for more than six months after your travel time
    • Have completed the ESTA forms or the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) if eligible

    Rent a Car for Easy Transportation Around the Island

    While public transit, rideshare apps, and taxis are available in the Metro region, one of the best ways to explore Puerto Rico is by renting a vehicle. The Island’s road infrastructure and traffic laws are very similar to those on the Mainland, so the only hard choice you will have to make is finding the perfect playlist to go with it.
